How to Maintain a Retention Pond

Published on: March 25, 2019

Retention ponds are a necessity in many developments to give water a place to converge to protect the surrounding property. These basins give storm water and water runoff an area to move toward to reduce erosion and foundation destruction, connecting to drainage systems throughout the property. However, retention ponds do require maintenance to keep them functional and to meet local codes. Property managers must put a process in place to maintain these artificial ponds to keep them maintained, including performing the following duties.

Keep Pond Clear of Debris

Leaves, garbage, branches and other items can be collected in the retention pond. If not removed, this debris can clog inlets and affect the aesthetics of the pond. Retention ponds need to be routinely cleared of debris to keep it functional and to prevent a community eyesore.

Control Plant Growth

Plants are attracted to water, but too much growth can create function issues in a retention pond. Grass and plants need to be removed as needed to ensure the pond is available for water collection. In some cases, plant retardant must be added to keep growth restrained.

Maintain Drainage

Retention ponds have inlets from surrounding drainage systems that can become clogged or damaged. The system needs to be routinely inspected and repaired as needed to ensure it continues to function as expected to allow the pond to work as planned.

If you are a commercial property manager with a retention pond on your property, it is crucial to have a reliable crew to maintain your drainage systems and pond. Consider hiring a landscaping company that offers retention pond maintenance to keep your drainage systems working correctly to protect your property.
