Building Your Own Backyard Fire Pit

Published on: October 12, 2014

There’s nothing quite like sitting around a roaring fire to relax and unwind. It’s even better when this fire is in your own backyard. Fire pits are, excuse the pun, a hot trend in home improvements, adding both light and heat for your backyard. Although you can buy fabricated fire pits, a permanent fire pit adds both beauty and value to your home while providing a fantastic place to build your backyard fire.

Choose Your Materials

Fire pits can be built from a variety of materials, from river rocks to brick. If you plan on building the pit yourself versus using a landscape contractor, you may want to use formed cement blocks or bricks which are easy to stack. Keep in mind, you will need an area to build your pit which is situated away from combustible materials, either on the ground or on a patio made of cement or stone.

An easy option for building a fire pit on your own is to use retaining wall blocks. They are larger in size than bricks and smaller stones, and come in a variety of colors and shapes. You can build both round or square pits using these blocks. Simply sketch the shape of the pit on the patio with chalk, then use cement, mortar or landscape glue to attach the first layer of blocks to the patio. After the first layer is secure, add  more adhesive between and a layer of blocks until you’ve reached the preferred height for your new fire pit.

For more intricate or elaborate fire pits, you may want to hire a contractor to ensure the job is done correctly. Your local landscape supply experts can discuss material options with you, and can recommend a local contractor who can build your fire pit.
