Choosing the Right Mulching Mower

Published on: March 27, 2013

Mulching mowers are an excellent source of natural fertilizer for your lawn. When you’re shopping for a mulching lawn mower, it’s important that you make the right choice that’s best for you and your lawn – nobody wants to spend a lot of money on a mower that isn’t the best choice.

Push mowers are the most common choice, due to them being relatively inexpensive, they’re usually very quiet, and they provide plenty of exercise. Push mowers are sold in most local hardware and garden stores, and even in larger department stores. You should shop around to find the model that’s light and built of quality materials. A major disadvantage of push mowers are their inability to blow the clippings away or down into the turf underfoot in the way that a power mower does.

Gas-powered mulching mowers have very powerful engines when compared to conventional mowers. This is because gas mulching mowers need extra power to continually cut the grass clippings into mulch. These models can be converted with bag for collecting mulch while mowing.

Electric mulching mowers are more quiet than models powered by gas. They also eliminate any unpleasant exhaust, and there’s no need to dispose of oil or fuel. Electric models may be the preferred choice for smaller yards, but they generally are not as powerful as gas mulching mowers are. The trade off for these disadvantages are being good for air quality – both from the smell, and the noise pollution.

If none of these options seem like the best choice, conventional mowers can be adapted into making a kind of mulch – all you have to do is remove the bag and cover up the discharge chute.
