Fall Lawn and Soil Care

Published on: October 14, 2010

Fall is here, and with it is the time to take care of a few minor lawn projects to make sure your yard returns lush and healthy after the cold winter!

First, get a lawn analysis.  Your local professional landscaper or lawn care company can do this for you.  Many areas require a fall treatment with lime to help maintain soil pH at the proper level.  Applying lime in the fall will help promote turf growth throughout the winter dormant season, and fertilization will work better.  Apply lime once a year, in the late summer or fall.

It is also time to areate your lawn.  Core aeration is the process of creating small holes in the lawn.  This will allow for air circulation to be improved, and will allow more moisture and fertilizer to impact the root zones.  Aeration also has been shown to help prevent lawn diseases.  Lawns should be aerated twice a year, in the fall and spring.

If you have areas of lawn that need some tender loving care, seeding may be in order.  Contact your local lawn care professionals for recommendations on the best seed to apply in the fall.  Lots of times, seeding does not need to be extensively done, and can be applied directly to the areas of need.  Contact a lawn care company for projects if the area is larger.

A little work in the fall will allow a lush green lawn in the spring for all to enjoy!  For more extensive projects, contact a landscaping or lawn-care professional who will be happy to assist in all of your lawn issues.
