What Is the Difference Between Landscapers and Lawn Service?

Published on: September 11, 2018

It is common to hear lawn service and landscaping used interchangeably, but they are not necessarily the same thing. Like all thumbs are fingers, but not all fingers are thumbs, the same is true for lawn service and landscaping. While most landscapers offer lawn service, not all lawn services offer landscaping. Here is a quick description of the two variances of this service industry and why it’s important to choose the right one.

Lawn Service

Lawn care or service refers to upkeep and maintenance of an existing lawn. Many landscapers offer this service, but for some companies, it is all they do. This involves the general maintenance of your lawn and yard, such as mowing, weeding eating, fertilizing, seeding and even pest/weed control. Most lawn service companies offer maintenance packages for once a week, bi-monthly or monthly service to keep your lawn looking great.

Landscaping

In general, landscaping refers to changing your existing outdoor space. This can include designing your landscape and adding soft and hardscapes. Soft-scaping is using plants to improve your yard, while hardscapes are the structures that are added like patios, retaining walls and ponds. Landscapers go way beyond trimming the grass and shrubs; they add new shrubs, plant gardens, build patios and much more to create a beautiful outdoor area for their clients.

If you just want someone to care for your lawn, you can hire either a landscaper or lawn service. However, it can be beneficial to hire a landscaper that offers more services, even for your regular maintenance. When the time comes to make improvements, you will already have a landscaper that you trust that can help you add soft or hardscapes to your outdoor space.
