First Steps in Redesigning Your Backyard Landscaping

Published on: January 3, 2015

If you’re considering a new landscape design for your backyard, you’re faced with many separate choices. You may be adding new sod and need to choose the right type of grass. You also may be considering adding new trees, plants, water or fire features, along with many other elements. However, before you get the details of your newly designed yard, there are a few basics you should consider.

Non-movable Items

Before planning your new landscape design, consider the elements that will still be in place. This can include large trees, sheds or other structures which aren’t movable. Also, you may need to consider items that are below the ground. Do you have sewer pipes or gas lines running under your yard? Make sure to incorporate all the stationary items into your plan.

Electricity and Plumbing

If you are adding features that will need electricity or plumbing, make sure these are the first elements you pinpoint when creating your landscape design. An outdoor kitchen, fireplace or waterfall which need utilities should be placed where there is access; otherwise, you may be spending more than you planned to have water or electrical lines extended.

Kids and Pets

Keep in mind that kids and pets have special needs when it comes to landscape design. You want a space that offers something for the whole family. Consider adding a space for outdoor toys, or a doggy romp area that will not interfere with the rest of your design.

Your local landscape designer can help you create a plan that’s affordable and feasible, taking all these factors into consideration. Trust an expert to make sure your landscape design turns out just like you’ve always envisioned.
