Lawn Mower Spring Maintenance

Published on: March 27, 2011

Now is a great time to get your lawn mower ready for the mowing season.  Whether you have a push mower or a riding mower, a little maintenance now will make your mowing season much more productive.  If you are not comfortable doing the maintenance yourself, take your mower to a local mower repair shop.

First, remove and sharpen the blades.  You can also take the blades to a repair shop and they will sharpen them for you.  While the blades are off, clean the bottom of the mower deck.  Be sure to remove all the grass embedded under the mower deck.  Next change the oil and clean the air filter.  Fill the gas tank with clean fuel and install a fresh spark plug.

If you have a riding mower, there are a couple more things you need to do.  Check the battery and fill it with water if needed.  Use only distilled water and be careful not to overfill it.  If the battery needs a charge, now is the time to put it on the charger.  Next, check the air in the tires and make sure they are evenly filled to the proper pressure.  Now, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for leveling the deck.

If all this sounds like too much work or you just don’t have the time to handle your mowing your lawn this year, consider calling a reputable local lawn care service.  They can put you on a lawn care schedule that will keep your yard looking great!
